Techcare Innovation Shares Application of Driving Simulator on Pre-driving Assessment at Hospital Cyberjaya

Empowering Rehab with Driving Simulation Technology

On 2nd July 2024, Hospital Cyberjaya together with Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) organized a workshop on Pre-driving Rehabilitation and Assessment. This event not only meant to provide knowledge sharing about Malaysia Pre-driving Rehab and Assessment, it also attracted occupational and physical therapists from across Malaysia to exchange their knowledge, experience and opinion. Fortunately, Techcare Innovation was honored to be invited to Hospital Cyberjaya to showcase our driving simulator technology. This is an opportunity for Techcare Innovation to showcase how driving simulation technology can aid in driving training and pre-driving assessment.

Workshop: Enhancing Skills and Knowledge Sharing

The workshop invited various experts from KKM, JPJ (Malaysia Traffic Department) and Hospital Cyberjaya to share on different topics like Malaysia Traffic Laws and Rules, Statistics of pre-driving rehab and assessment. They also highlighted the importance of pre-driving assessment and how it relates to individual Cognitive ability. They ended with how the Government will enforce new SOP on Pre-driving assessment and bring in driving simulator technology into the rehab & assessment process.  These sessions enhance the skills and knowledge of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Khor, Techcare Innovation's Rehab Technology Specialist, led one of the sessions that showcased application of driving simulators in pre-driving rehabilitation. He highlighted the vital role driving simulation plays in helping patients regain their driving abilities. During his session, he invited participants to try up the driving simulators while he explained the features of Techcare Driving Simulator.

The Importance of Pre-Driving Rehabilitation Using Simulators

Driving simulators offer numerous benefits for pre-driving training. They allow users to practice in a risk-free environment, which is especially important for those recovering from injuries or surgeries. Simulators can replicate a variety of real-world scenarios, helping users to improve their cognitive abilities, reaction times, and decision-making skills. By engaging in simulated driving tasks, users can work on their coordination, strength, and reflexes, all of which are essential for safe driving.

This preparation is vital for ensuring a smooth transition back to independent driving on actual roads. As people age or recover from injuries, daily activities like driving can become challenging. Integrating driving simulation into physical therapy can significantly boost the effectiveness of therapy, ensuring patients regaining their driving ability as soon as possible

Techcare Innovation's Driving Simulator

Driving simulators are becoming an essential tool in physical therapy, as it can be used for not just pre-driving rehabilitation, but assessments as well.  It can help to evaluate a patient's readiness to drive. Therefore, Techcare Innovation's driving simulator is designed to assist individuals in returning to driving by providing realistic training and also comprehensive assessment.

The simulator features over 20 training practices, including city driving, night driving, obstacle avoidance, speed control, reverse parking, and lateral parking maneuvers. These scenarios are crafted to help users hone their driving skills comprehensively. Our driving simulator also provides a thorough assessment by simulating real-world driving challenges, enabling therapists to evaluate and improve the driving capabilities of their patients. This process helps ensure that patients can navigate various road conditions safely and confidently.

Besides, our driving simulator is equipped with interactive light systems, various vehicle models, and diverse driving scenarios. These features enable a detailed and engaging training program. While on the assessment part, the simulator assesses cognitive abilities, reaction times, and decision-making skills, providing both users and therapist with a clear picture of users’ driving readiness.

The driving simulator can be used in various rehabilitation and driving school settings, including hospitals, rehab centers, and private clinics. It is ideal for patients recovering from strokes, surgeries, or other conditions that affect their driving abilities.

Conclusion

Participants at the workshop provided very positive feedback on the driving simulator session. They appreciated the practical experience and the opportunity to try the simulator themselves. The interactive session helped them create a deeper understanding of how driving simulation can be integrated into physical therapy and other rehabilitation practices. We extend our gratitude to Hospital Cyberjaya and all participants for their enthusiasm and trust in our products and services. We learnt a lot from this workshop as well.
